Text Hebrews 3:7 – 4:10
Exodus 20:8-11, Deuteronomy 5:12-15, Exodus 31:12-17, the Third Commandment regarding Sabbath
Sabbath means “rest.” Sabbath is our sign and memorial of deliverance from sin and unto the new creation.
Nehemiah 13:15-21, Nehemiah shuts the gates on the Sabbath and threatens to hurt anyone who attempts to get in the city to buy and sell on the Sabbath.
2 Chronicles 36:15-21, the fall of Jerusalem was due, in part, to their profaning of the Sabbath (verse 21).
CCC 2184, Sabbath is a protest against the servitude of work and the worship of money.
Ezekiel 20:12-26, Israelites defiled the Sabbath and did not enter into the Promised Land of rest.
Mark 2:23-28, Jesus does not cancel Sabbath keeping, but says Sabbath is a gift to man.
Promises regarding Sabbath:
- Isaiah 56:2, Sabbath keepers are blessed
- Isaiah 56:4, Sabbath keepers have an eternal reward
- Isaiah 58:13, Sabbath keepers experience plenty and greatness (this meaning is primarily spiritual)
- Ezekiel 20:12-26, Sabbath keepers LIVE, Sabbath profaners die (they stress out, burn out, experience bad health…)
- Isaiah 30:15, In returning and rest you shall be saved.
Matt 12:1-8, Jesus draws a parallel between Sabbath and mercy.
